FAQ
Jardiance cost questions
How much does Jardiance cost with insurance?
Most commercially insured patients pay $25–$95/month for Jardiance. Tier 2 plans average $25–$45/month; Tier 3 plans $75–$95 after deductible. The Boehringer Ingelheim Savings Card can drop eligible patients to $10/month.
What is the Jardiance Savings Card?
The Boehringer Ingelheim Jardiance Savings Card caps eligible commercially insured patients at $10/month for a 30-day supply, with up to $150 in savings per month. Medicare and Medicaid patients are not eligible but may qualify for BI Cares patient assistance.
Is there a generic for Jardiance?
No — Jardiance (empagliflozin) is brand-only with no generic available. Patents extend through the mid-2030s based on current expirations. There are no biosimilars (Jardiance is not a biologic).
How does Jardiance compare to Farxiga?
Both Jardiance (empagliflozin) and Farxiga (dapagliflozin) are SGLT2 inhibitors used for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. Pricing is similar. Coverage may favor one over the other depending on plan formulary preferences and prior treatment history.
Why does Jardiance show a $35 Medicare cap?
Under the Inflation Reduction Act, Medicare Part D plans cap diabetes-related medications at $35/month for beneficiaries, including Jardiance when prescribed for type 2 diabetes. The cap doesn't apply when Jardiance is prescribed solely for heart failure or CKD without diabetes.
What conditions does Jardiance treat?
Jardiance is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, heart failure (reduced and preserved ejection fraction), and chronic kidney disease. Coverage may vary by indication — your plan may require diabetes diagnosis for full coverage.
Does insurance cover Jardiance for weight loss?
Jardiance is not FDA-approved for weight loss. Modest weight loss is a side effect but plans typically don't cover Jardiance prescribed off-label for weight management. For weight loss, GLP-1 medications like Wegovy or Zepbound are the FDA-approved options.
What if my Jardiance prior authorization is denied?
Options: (1) appeal with documentation of type 2 diabetes, heart failure, or CKD, (2) switch to Farxiga or another SGLT2 if covered, (3) use the BI Savings Card with commercial insurance, or (4) apply for BI Cares Patient Assistance if you meet financial criteria.
