FAQ

Mounjaro cost questions

How much does Mounjaro cost with insurance?
Most commercially insured patients with a type 2 diabetes diagnosis pay $25–$455/month for Mounjaro. Tier 2 plans average $25–$45/month; Tier 3 plans $95–$455 depending on coinsurance. Coverage requires a diabetes diagnosis.
How is Mounjaro different from Zepbound?
Mounjaro and Zepbound are the same active ingredient (tirzepatide) and same Eli Lilly manufacturer but have different FDA approvals: Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes, Zepbound for chronic weight management. Insurance coverage differs accordingly — diabetes plans cover Mounjaro readily; weight-loss coverage for Zepbound varies.
What is the Mounjaro savings card?
The Lilly Cares Mounjaro Savings Card caps eligible commercially insured patients at $25/month for a 1- or 3-month supply, with a maximum of $150 in savings per month. Medicare, Medicaid, and uninsured patients are not eligible.
Is there a generic for Mounjaro?
No — Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is brand-only with no generic available. Patent expirations begin in the 2030s. There are no biosimilars or generic equivalents available or in development.
Why does Mounjaro have better coverage than Zepbound?
Mounjaro is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, which is covered by virtually all insurance plans. Zepbound is FDA-approved for weight management, which many employer plans exclude from coverage. Same drug, different coverage realities based on the prescribed indication.
Does Medicare cover Mounjaro?
Yes — Medicare Part D plans typically cover Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes at Tier 2 or 3. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, Medicare beneficiaries pay no more than $2,000/year out-of-pocket for all Part D drugs combined.
What's LillyDirect Self-Pay?
LillyDirect is Eli Lilly's direct-to-consumer pharmacy. Mounjaro is not currently in the self-pay vial program (only Zepbound vials are), but eligible patients can access manufacturer savings programs through LillyDirect channels.
What if my Mounjaro PA is denied?
Options: (1) confirm your prescriber documented type 2 diabetes, (2) appeal with A1C documentation and prior treatment failures, (3) switch to a covered GLP-1 alternative (Ozempic, Trulicity), or (4) apply for the Lilly Cares Patient Assistance Program if eligible.
